My first Scottish Deerhound
(1980), "Nessie".
 |
I met "Nessie", my first
Scottish
Deerhound, in 1980. While she did
well in our first show, she never went
back into the show ring.
She preferred being a couch potato;
she was a sweetheart who provided
a magnificent introduction
to Sighthounds. |
"Daemon"

|
| "Daemon" was my first rescue
Deerhound. His name was Dmons Aberdeen Angus; his breeder took him back from a
family which had mistreated him. Being a computer engineer, I decided to call him
"Daemon", since it is a computer term and is a take-off on his kennel name. He
was 11 months old when we met and I was worried how he would behave around little
children. My niece was a baby then and she would ride both "Daemon" and
"Kije" as if they were horses. Both treated her with incredible gentleness. |

| "Miss Phire", Fairyforts
Black Sapphire, joined us in 1987. At first, I just shortened her name to
"Phire", but a dear friend in Albuquerque came by and caller her Miss Sapphire
thats when "Miss Phire" became her name. When "Daemon" died, I returned to "Miss Phires"
breeder to get one puppy and ended up coming home with two: Fairyforts River Rogue,
"Rogue" and Fairyforts River Run, "Runner". "Rogue"
and "Runner" were inseparable companions. "Rogue" did well in the show
ring and did some coursing; "Runner" was more inclined to 'couching'. |
"FDDI"
 |
"FDDI", Fernhills Fyne
Moondancer joined us in 1995. Her nickname was FDDI, a computer networking term, selected
because she was very fast. She made the 5th hound in the household but
she quickly found her place in the pack and in my heart. |
"Kije"
 |
My first Borzoi was "Kije",
named
for the Prokofiev suite; he joined the
household in 1982. He was a beautiful
Borzoi who had the rare opportunity to
appear on stage in the ballet Giselle
in Chicago it was just a "walk on"
part (pun intended). |
"Bandit"
 |
"Bandits" registered
name was
Fairyforts Ring of Fire.
He had a red mask across his eyes,
but he earned the name "Bandit"
by repeatedly stealing my leather-banded
watch and sleeping with it. |
Fernhill's Theron, "Thearne"
 |
"Thearne" was born in September 1997
and became a Moondancer in June of 1998. He was not show quality;
his tail was in the shape of a checkmark when he was born so his breeder cut it back. His
nickname, understandably, was Handsome Half-a-Tail Thearne, only lived with us for one year, as he passed away in June 1999. He was
a wonderful, exuberant pup and his memory is cherished.

"Indy"
became a
Moondancer in August 2001; he had been found roaming loose in Indiana
(hence the name) and taken to an animal shelter. We are deeply
indebted to Liz Duncan for fostering him and to Carol Backers and the rest
of NBRF for letting him join our home and hearts.
Indy was the fifth Borzoi to become a Moondancer in the 20+ years I have
had this kennel name, so he was also affectionately called
"Indy-5".
